Total Ecosolutions: A Programme to Make Our Products Greener
Controlling consumption more effectively and improving environmental performance are major challenges for the energy sector. Since 2009, Total has been developing its Total Ecosolutions programme, a truly innovative approach which offers its customers ecologically efficient solutions, to help them better control their environmental impact by consuming less and better.
At the end of 2015, more than 80 products and services had received the “Total Ecosolutions” label and their sales in 2015 resulted in savings of 1.7 million tonnes of CO₂ (over their lifetimes), i.e. the equivalent of the annual emissions of 190,000 Europeans.1
The Total Quartz Ineo ECS 5W-30 engine lubricant for light vehicles provides protection for engines against wear and dirt and reduces fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions.

Thanks to their unique design, SunPower® high-output solar panels produce more electricity during their lifetime than other panels on the market and have a smaller environmental impact.
Used as insecticides, acaricides or fungicides, phytosanitary paraffin oils from Total Fluides are biodegradable and permitted for use in organic agriculture in Europe.
Lumicene® 32ST05 polyethylene allows the thickness of industrial or food packaging to be reduced while providing the same level of technical performance.
Azalt® ECO2 range bitumens, used in manufacturing low-temperature asphalts for road use, allow our customers to make significant energy savings and reduce their CO₂ emissions at the same time.
TOTAL EXCELLIUM, a new generation of fuel that cleans and protects engines mile after mile, increasing performance and fuel economy and reducing pollution.
A Response to Environmental Issues
85% of greenhouse-gas emissions from the oil and gas sector come from the end-use of products by consumers.2 We are constantly looking for ways to reduce these emissions.
“One of the main focuses of our continuing development is energy efficiency: consuming less in our processes and developing products that help the consumer to reduce consumption.” 3 Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of Total.
Through this continuous improvement approach, Total’s teams have put their expertise to good use in key areas (Research and Development, Marketing, Strategy, Sustainable Development), to innovate and seek out more ecologically effective solutions.
The Total Ecosolutions programme promotes products and services that provide significantly higher environmental performance (health aspects included) throughout their entire life cycle than current market standards. This includes reductions in CO₂ emissions and volatile organic compound content, and lower consumption of natural resources, energy and water.
A Brand with Demanding Standards Promoting Ecological Efficiency
As part of this programme we have introduced the Total Ecosolutions brand, helping our customers to identify solutions that offer better environmental performance. These products comply with international standards ISO 14020 and 140214, which govern environmental declarations and guarantee their accuracy. In addition, an independent audit firm checks the conformity of the process.
To qualify for the label, Total products and services have to go through a selection process and meet the following conditions:
- development has been completed and the product/service is available on the market;
- the improvement made must not simply be a response to a standard or regulatory requirement but must go further in order for the product/service to achieve “more ecologically efficient” status;
- compared with mainstream products on the market, and fulfilling a similar function, the product or service must offer significant advantages in terms of environmental/health performance and do so throughout its lifetime.
A Diversified Range Adapting to Changes in the Market
To ensure that our products remain environmentally friendly over time, the Total Ecosolutions range is reviewed every year. If a product no longer meets the criteria, its accreditation is withdrawn.
Today more than 80 products and services are accredited under the label in the fields of:
- transport (fuels, lubricants, cleaning);
- housing (resins, SunPower solar panels);
- agriculture (lubricants for agricultural vehicle engines, phytosanitary paraffin oils);
- packaging (resins);
- infrastructures (bitumen, drilling fluids);
- industrial manufacturing (solvents, metallising systems).
The Total Ecosolutions programme is one of a series of Total commitments designed to meet our customers' requirements by enabling them to reduce their environmental impact and offering them a regularly improved and broader range of products and services.
